Shalom Centre for Counseling and Development was established in 1992 after the politically instigated bloody ethnic confrontations that ushered in political pluralism after many years of single party rule.It was an initiative of professional women in the fields of social work, teaching, nursing and counseling who came together with the women victims of the violence in western Kenya.

The women organized various sessions under the leadership of one, Mrs. Tecla Wanjala, as they consoled one another, weeped together, sang Christian hymns as they provided physical and psycho social support to the grieving women caught in the crossfire. They initiated trauma healing programs and reconciliation processes which led to the resettlement of the internally displaced families in the three main feuding communities in the region.

Over the years the Centre which began as a women self help group has transformed into a national civil society dealing with peace development, conflicts transformations, reconciliative healing, restorative justice and community development. It is one of the most vibrant civic bodies involved in peace training and development in Africa.

Holds an MA in Conflicts Transformations. She is the founder of Shalom Centre for Counseling and Development and a Peace Consultant with Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) .

Stephen Kiseve
Holds a BSc in Agriculture and an MSc in Agricultural Resource Management. He is a researcher and an agricultural officer with the Ministry of Agriculture, Kenya.

Susan Waiyego
Holds a BEd (Hons) in History, an MA in Gender Politics and she is a PhD candidate and a Lecturer in the department of History and Political Studies at Kenyatta University.

Lawrence Muiruri
Holds a degree in Economics and a graduate degree in Law and works as a State Attorney in the department of Civil Litigation at the Attorney General office in Nairobi, Kenya.

Edward Karinoni
Holds a BEd (Hons) in Commerce and is a civil servant teaching at Bumamu Secondary School in western Kenya.

Herberts Wamalwa
Holds a BEd (Hons) and is doing an MSc in Information Technology. He is the Training Manager of Shalom I.T. Centre.

Holds a BEd (Hons) in Mathematics and Economics and works with Equity Bank Ltd as a Credit Officer.
